Points To Consider For Varicose Vein Surgery.

Many times, we hear of varicose veins being regarded by most to be a cosmetic problem rather than a serious, life-threatening one. These marks are, without doubt, a sore to the eyes wherever they are and people – particularly women, would be glad to get rid of them the quickest possible way.

Causes of varicose veins

The causes of varicose veins are not new to many; however, there can’t seem to be enough emphasis especially in areas where lifestyle changes are concerned. Varicose and spider veins can be prevented especially if one is careful in terms of diet, and is religious in keeping up with leg-strengthening exercises on a regular basis. Pregnancy may also be a contributory factor – given the increasing levels of progestin and estrogen levels during such time, as well as intake of oral contraceptives. Pregnancy-caused varicose veins, however, usually fade away after six months following delivery. Some research also show that a percentage of varicose vein occurrences are factored in by heredity.

Treatment and prevention

Varicose veins are more often than not treatable with simple methods such as wearing compression stockings, or undergoing laser light vein removal. For people who don’t have it but are threatened by the likeability of its occurrence, maintaining a low-sodium and high fiber diet is one of the most effective preventive measures. Leg strengthening exercises at least twice a week will also help prevent the weakening of veins in the legs which can cause the development of varicose veins. Another preventive measure especially advisable for women is to refrain from wearing tight-fitting jeans or clothes that will cause compression of the veins.

Sclerotherapy

One popular treatment option for varicose veins is sclerotherapy. It is an outpatient procedure in which a sclerosant (salt solution) is injected on the enlarged nerves. This should cause the inner linings of the veins to get irritated, consequently swell, and eventually scar. It does not require hospital admission and can in fact be done in the therapist’s clinic.

More severe cases of varicose veins

As earlier mentioned, varicose veins should not be a huge problem, except that they can be a huge cosmetic boo-boo; however, in some cases, surgical procedures such as vein ligation and stripping may have to be done in order to improve the quality of life of patients. The following are some instances in which varicose veins must be surgically removed:

  1. There is venous insufficiency. In other words, the varicose veins are becoming an impediment to blood flow.
  2. There is persistent leg pain.
  3. There is lipodermatosclerosis, where fatty tissue forming under the skin becomes hard due to vein compression.
  4. Venous ulcers are present. These are sores that are brought about by excessive pressure from the enlarged veins.

Vein stripping and ligation

This treatment option is a type of varicose vein surgery wherein small incisions are made on the areas surrounding the affected vein. These incisions are then used as access points to the veins that will then be tied and ligated. Patients undergoing this procedure should be placed under general or spinal anesthesia to keep them unconscious during the painful parts of the procedure.
