Proper Sleep Positions That Can Enhance The Quality Of Your Sleep.

Sleep is very important to man. In fact, there are six very important reasons why people need sleep. It helps our brain process information and commit them to memory. It is important for metabolism since lack of sleep can affect how our body processes the foods we eat. In fact, sleep deprivation has been linked to weight gain.

Sleep also helps regulate our moods. After all, lack of it can cause us to be irritable, moody, and temperamental. We also heal faster if we have enough sleep, allowing our body to rest and recuperate, thus, speeding up the healing process. Having adequate sleep also helps make our heart and vascular system healthier. In the long run, better sleep promotes health and safety.

Look at it this way; with a good night’s rest, there is less risk of falling asleep while driving, say for example, or when you are taking care of a patient.

With the many benefits of sleep though, there are still some people who have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep long enough for their body and brain to rest. If you are one of these, then here are three sleep positions that can help promote better rest and sleep.

Sleeping on Your Stomach

Sleeping on the stomach is the least favorite sleep position since this places extreme pressure on the spine and causes lower back pain. However, if you are fond of sleeping in this position, then what you can do to make the position more comfortable for you is to place a pillow under your pelvis.

The pillow will prevent hyperextension of the back and promote a more normal curvature of the spine. You can also promote better cervical spine alignment by placing a small pillow under the shoulder which your head faces. This reduces the stress on the neck and prevents greater neck rotation.

Sleeping on Your Back

Sleeping on the back is the second most favorite sleep posture; however, this, like sleeping on the stomach, is also very uncomfortable for some, especially if you do not practice proper support of the spinal column. To make this position comfortable for you, you have to place a pillow under your neck, of course, to support the cervical spine and maintain its normal curvature. You also have to place a pillow under your knees so your lumbar spine will not flatten out and to maintain its normal curvature as well.

Sleeping on Your Side

Sleeping on your side is the most favorite and most popular sleep position. Not only is it very comfortable but it also promotes the best sleep position since it allows for normal curvature of the spine. However, you can make it even more comfortable by placing a pillow between your legs. What this does is to prevent over-rotation of the pelvis, which can cause pain in the lower back region.

You can also place a pillow under your waist since this can help straighten the spine. Of course, you need to have a pillow under your head to keep the cervical spine straight.

Finally, purchase the best mattress for you. See to it that it is not too soft that you sink in the bed or too hard that your posture is rigid. These will only increase low back pain.
