Sleeping on Your Stomach
Sleeping on the stomach is the least favorite sleep position since this places extreme pressure on the spine and causes lower back pain. However, if you are fond of sleeping in this position, then what you can do to make the position more comfortable for you is to place a pillow under your pelvis.
The pillow will prevent hyperextension of the back and promote a more normal curvature of the spine. You can also promote better cervical spine alignment by placing a small pillow under the shoulder which your head faces. This reduces the stress on the neck and prevents greater neck rotation.
Sleeping on Your Back
Sleeping on the back is the second most favorite sleep posture; however, this, like sleeping on the stomach, is also very uncomfortable for some, especially if you do not practice proper support of the spinal column. To make this position comfortable for you, you have to place a pillow under your neck, of course, to support the cervical spine and maintain its normal curvature. You also have to place a pillow under your knees so your lumbar spine will not flatten out and to maintain its normal curvature as well.
Sleeping on Your Side
Sleeping on your side is the most favorite and most popular sleep position. Not only is it very comfortable but it also promotes the best sleep position since it allows for normal curvature of the spine. However, you can make it even more comfortable by placing a pillow between your legs. What this does is to prevent over-rotation of the pelvis, which can cause pain in the lower back region.
You can also place a pillow under your waist since this can help straighten the spine. Of course, you need to have a pillow under your head to keep the cervical spine straight.
Finally, purchase the best mattress for you. See to it that it is not too soft that you sink in the bed or too hard that your posture is rigid. These will only increase low back pain.
