Do you want to become the greatest fighter in the world? MMA is becoming hugely popular and a lot of people are beginning to get involved each and every day. If you’re one of those people you might like to know what kind of equipment you’re going to be using, so let’s take a look at some of the basic beginners equipment you can expect to see.

A pair of shorts

If you want to take things seriously you will want a pair of MMA shorts. They are designed to protect you while in the ring, plus as an added bonus they will also aid your performance because they’re specially designed for the sport. I’m sure you have seen some with all sorts of wonderful designs on the front, so you should pick up a pair you’ll be proud to wear when you get started.

Training gloves

If you want to train with the proper equipment on you will need to get a pair of training gloves. These will allow you to grapple on the floor properly because they don’t have a huge amount of padding compared to bag gloves. Just remember you shouldn’t be smashing your training partner in the head when you’re wearing these because you’re not in a real fight.

Bag gloves

You will spend a lot of hours hitting a bag or a pad during training, so you will need to get yourself a pair of bag gloves. They come with a lot of padding and some extra wrist support, so if you spend 30 minutes on the bags you won’t walk away with any broken bones or stress fractures. You shouldn’t wear these to roll around on the ground because they will get in your way.

Shin pads

When you kick a bag or a pad repeatedly you can walk away with a very sore shin bone. How do you think someone else is going to feel when you’re kicking them? If you don’t want anyone to get injured while you practice your kicking it’s important to wear shin pads. You will also protect your own shins, which means you’ll be able to stand up the day after training.

Rash guard

Anyone who has grappled without a rash guard before will tell you it’s easy to get injured. Sometimes the pain from a sore rash is just as bad as the sore wrist you would get from punching a bag without gloves. A rash guard definitely doesn’t look good, but it will protect your skin and it will mean you don’t end up with horrible blotches all over your body.

Headgear

Before you’re skilled you won’t be able to spar with someone properly, but after a while you might want to speed things up. If you don’t wear headgear you won’t be able to step it up because you’ll probably get knocked out within minutes. Headgear lets you go a lot faster, so even though you’re only training you might be throwing your punches a little harder like a real fight.

Compression shorts

If you’ve ever worn a jockstrap before you will know what these are all about. They’re essentially the MMA equivalent and they will keep certain private parts protected while you’re inside the ring. You never know where your training partner could accidentally put their knee when they get caught up in the moment.

Look for the full-package

You won’t have any equipment yet if you’re just getting started, so you should definitely look around because a lot of places will offer you complete packages. It means you will be able to pick up a lot of equipment while saving a ton of money at the same time.
