Excessive Bed Bug Bites on Children: Signs and Symptoms and Treatment

Excessive bed bugs bites on children are causing a stir; they have made appearances at summer camps, hotel rooms, movie theaters, renowned retail stores, and other household and commercial buildings. According to the U.S Congressional Don’t Let the Bed Bug Bite Act of 2009, bed bug populations have increased by about 500% in the past years. Due to this fact, a lot of people are growing more worried about the possibility of contracting this infestation in their own homes.

Families, especially those with young children, have a reason to worry about these little suckers. These bugs, with the color and size of an apple seed, can invade single-family homes, apartments, dorms, and condominiums.

Bed Bug Bites: Who Are At Risk?

Bed bugs feed on humans and other warm-blooded animals; thus, it doesn’t matter what age their victim is. These bugs are commonly seen in places where travelers pass through, such as hotels, inns, and shelters. These critters do not feed on trash or dirt, and there is no relationship between poor hygiene and untidiness to this bug infestation.

However, if you are worried about your children being bitten by bed bugs, you have to be aware that babies who sleep in multiple different environments are more prone to bedbug bites. This is because they are more exposed to the different potential habitats of these bugs. For this reason, before you put your child to sleep in a new place, you must first check if these bugs are present. Their eggs are about the size of a large grain of salt, and the adult bugs are about the size of an apple seed.

Signs And Symptoms Of Bed Bug Bites

If you notice your child scratching or rubbing their arms or legs, that may be the first sign of a bedbug bite. What starts as small, bruise-like areas can turn into red bumps on different exposed areas of the body, such as arms, legs, chest, and face. After two weeks, these bites may leave darker areas on the skin which is known as the post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation. But how can you tell if your child’s red bug bites are from bed bugs? Bed bug bites are typically in a line pattern. These bugs also bite in areas where you don’t normally see other bug bites, such as on the back, chest, and face.

Infants and toddlers who are vulnerable to eczema, which is a skin condition, can develop bumpy redness in large areas, and they may experience severe itching. This will result to extreme scratching in the area which puts the toddler at risk for bacterial infection, especially if the skin breaks due to excessive scratching.

Treatment For Bedbug Bites

If your child is bitten by these little suckers, you can use a low-strength tropical corticosteroid ointment. This can be bought over the counter to reduce itching; however, it must not be applied on the face or in skin folds. Additionally, you must remember to trim your child’s nails to avoid creating a wound in the skin due to extreme scratching

When do you need to seek medical care? Your toddler or infant may need medical attention to reduce intense itchy bites; however, you must consult your child’s pediatrician before trying an antihistamine. Alleviating the skin irritation is essential since infants are more prone to excessive scratching, and they might rub the affected area on anything they can get their hands on. Since scratching can lead to bacterial infection, if you observe any pus, redness, or swelling, you must immediately seek help. In addition, you must be aware that there have been uncommon cases of severe allergic reaction that can affect the child’s breathing. If your child experiences such reaction, seek emergency medical care.
